Nothing Left to Lose Pt. 10

 -What If?-

Kendra threw her phone onto the seat behind her. Could Bracken really be alive? That had definitely sounded like him, and if Bracken was alive, does that mean Seth…? No. There’s no way. And even if they were alive, how would she look into their eyes after everything she’s done. For years Kendra has gone all around the world and killed so many terrible people, but in the process, she has become a terrible person herself. Yes, she had probably saved some people from becoming victims of her own victims but, she had hurt or even killed everybody who had gotten her way. How could Kendra go home to her family let alone Seth or Bracken? Kendra tried to push that question out of her mind. She didn’t have to worry about that because Seth and Bracken were gone, dead. Kendra’s thoughts were consumed by what if’s for the rest of the car ride.

When Kendra woke she was in a hotel room, she must have been really distracted because she didn’t even remember getting on a plane, let alone getting a hotel room. She sat up from the bed she had been sleeping in and walked to the window. It definitely looked like she had made it to Italy but she had no idea how. This had happened before though, every once in a while Kendra would lose time but never for the amount of time it took to get to Italy. Kendra walked over to the bathroom and looked at herself in the mirror, she was about to lean down and splash some water on her face when she noticed something on her face and neck. Was that blood? Kendra leaned closer to the mirror, it was definitely blood. She had seen enough of it over the past three years to know blood when she saw it. “What the heck?” Kendra whispered. She got a cloth and dampened it with some water, and washed off the blood. It wasn’t hers though she had no cuts on her. But if it wasn’t her blood, then who’s was it? She would have to figure it out later, right now, she had work to do.

It took a few hours for Kendra to find where Ronodin was staying, but she definitely found it. He was staying in a small fancy apartment with a nice water view. It wasn’t hard to get, in the door was locked, but the windows looking over the water weren’t. Kendra was small enough to fit on the ledge and climb up the wall using the bricks that stuck out a bit more than the others. Kendra hopped through the window and looked around, nobody was home. She walked around the apartment for anything that might be useful. There were no books or letters or anything that could hint at what Ronodin was doing here. Deciding she probably wasn’t going to find anything Kendra moved to the kitchen, she hadn’t eaten all day and Ronodin wasn’t going to be around long enough to use anything in here. There wasn’t much in the fridge besides some grape juice. Kendra grabbed it and went to look for a glass. Why on earth would he only have wine glasses and no normal glasses? Kendra thought when she found the glassware cabinet. She poured the juice into the glass, then sat on the counter and waited.

It wasn’t long before the sound of a key being jammed into a lock snapped Kendra’s attention to the door around the corner from her. And there he was, the man that had killed Seth and Bracken right in front of her, and he should’ve died that same awful day, but there he was, very much alive. Kendra wished she had a camera so that she could capture the look of sheer terror on his face when he saw her sitting there. It seemed he was frozen as if she couldn’t see him if he didn’t move. Kendra took the last sip of her drink and jumped off the counter. “Surprised to see me?” She asked. “I-I didn’t think you would find me here,” Ronodin said, walking into the kitchen.
“Well, I have eyes everywhere these days. Some would say I’ve my own mini-empire.”
“Only eyes? No ears?” He asked, getting a bit too close to her for her liking. “How old are you now? 19? 20? Old enough that Bracken probably would’ve been your boyfriend by now, right?”
Kendra tried to contain herself, she needed to do this right this time. Though, all she really wanted to do was push him out the window.
“Don’t talk about him!” She yelled. Ronodin just leaned against the counter as if daring her to come at him. “What are you going to do? Kill me? You’ve tried that before.” At that, Kendra took the wine glass that was still in her hand, smashed the top of it on the counter beside her, and drove the shattered side into Ronodin's side. “Oh, I’m going to do much worse than that,” Kendra said, pulling out the glass and letting Ronodin fall to the ground.

Brandon Mull's Interview with Shadow Mountain

Today Bradon Mull was interviewed by Callie Hansen on the Shadow Moutain YouTube channel. I was able to take the time to watch it live and thought I would share some of the questions and answers with everyone. I will not go over everything said, just mostly just the things that affect Fablehaven and DragonWatch. If you want to watch the full interview, you can find it on YouTube! The first question I want to go over is: How do you come up with so many names for people, creatures, and magical items?  Brandon’s answer, “I do put thought into names because, to me, the perfect fantasy name is something king of new, and different, but also reasonably easy to pronounce.  And so finding those kinds of names, at least for me, takes time, takes some thought, sometimes I make up the names.  For example, the perfect fantasy name to me is Gandal, right? Easy to say, easy to spell and you don’t have a friend at school named Gandalf usually.  And so that’s the kind of name I...

Nothing Left to Lose Pt. 17

-Endings- “Stop!” Bracken yelled, but he was too late. Kendra pulled the blade from Ronodin’s chest. Kendra’s face showed no remorse as Ronodin’s body hit the ground.  Bracken ran to Ronodin’s side, stopping him from falling down the hill.  “I just did you a huge favor,” Kendra said, wiping off her sword. “You are nothing like the girl I knew. You might be worse than he ever was.” Bracken spat at this person he did not know. “That’s what I was going for, you saw what he did to the world, now you get to see what I’ll do with it. Just to keep you on the edge of your seat, it’s a lot worse.” A big black hole like portal popped up behind Kendra, she took a step back into it and disappeared. Bracken’s attention turned to Ronodin, but he was dead. “I’m sorry,” Warren said, the morning after Ronodin was killed. “It is not your fault, that girl is the one who killed him,” Bracken replied looking out the window. They had buried Ronodin in the backyard, Bracken would have taken h...

Nothing Left to Lose Pt. 20

-Funeral- Bracken, Seth, and Warren walked into the church at twelve o’clock the next day. If this all went well, they would have Kendra back by the end of the day.  “Hello handsome, and the other two, but damn Bracken, you do look good in a suit.” She said, looking him up and down. They had all decided to go with formal wear and apparently so had she. She was wearing a long black dress that barely had a back, and her lips were the color of blood. Behind her was a picture of Kendra that was covered in black see through fabric. “Shouldn’t this be a funeral for the newest person you killed?” Bracken asked. “Really?” Kendra said with a sigh, then she snapped her fingers and a picture of Ronodin popped up, “Better?”  Bracken didn’t respond.  “Why do you even care that I killed him? Don’t you remember what he did to you? Oh, did you two make up? Have a family dinner heart to heart?” “Just because we had our differences doesn’t mean I wanted him dead, things have changed...
