Nothing Left to Lose Pt. 21

-New beginnings- The trip back to Fablehaven was a long one, mostly because Seth had to go see the singing sisters about a deal he made but couldn't remember. Which sounded like a very bad thing but apparently, Seth had been able to work out something new with them and he "would tell her about it later". But Kendra was now back at Fablehaven and her family was throwing a party. It was fun, but Kendra needed a break from all the people. So she went on a walk to the hidden pond.  When she got there, it was almost surreal, it had been so long since she had been there. "You're not running away again are you?" A voice said from behind Kendra, it was Bracken.  "No, I just wanted to go on a walk, that's all." "Yeah, I get it," He said, stepping up onto the gazebo Kendra was in, "I brought this, I thought you might want to get rid of it," Bracken held up the unicorn necklace. "Oh, I definitely want to get rid of it, give it h...

Nothing Left to Lose Pt. 20

-Funeral- Bracken, Seth, and Warren walked into the church at twelve o’clock the next day. If this all went well, they would have Kendra back by the end of the day.  “Hello handsome, and the other two, but damn Bracken, you do look good in a suit.” She said, looking him up and down. They had all decided to go with formal wear and apparently so had she. She was wearing a long black dress that barely had a back, and her lips were the color of blood. Behind her was a picture of Kendra that was covered in black see through fabric. “Shouldn’t this be a funeral for the newest person you killed?” Bracken asked. “Really?” Kendra said with a sigh, then she snapped her fingers and a picture of Ronodin popped up, “Better?”  Bracken didn’t respond.  “Why do you even care that I killed him? Don’t you remember what he did to you? Oh, did you two make up? Have a family dinner heart to heart?” “Just because we had our differences doesn’t mean I wanted him dead, things have changed...

Nothing Left to Lose Pt. 19

-Invitation- “She wants you to do what?” Warren asked, or more like yelled loud enough to make everyone wince. Bracken had just gotten back from the “date” and had finished telling them about what had happened, though it seemed to Seth like he had left a few bits out. “I told her I wasn’t going to do it. She’s feeling guilty about the last three years, and probably almost killing me.” Bracken said, but Seth still couldn’t believe that his sister would think they would kill her. Even if her body was taken over by an evil version of herself.  “Yeah, that is not something we’re doing. Maybe Tanu will find something, has anybody heard from him?” Seth asked. “Not yet, but he should be calling soon.”  After a few more minutes of thinking of ways to get the necklace when a knock came from the door, “Are we expecting anybody?” Vanessa asked. “Not that I know of,” Seth said, getting up and heading for the door. He opened it to find an envelope addressed to My dearest family and ...

-Cafe date- Bracken walked up to the cafe, it wasn’t that far from the house, so he had decided to walk. He opened the door and walked in, there was nobody inside, well, nobody besides her. She was dressed in a short red silk spaghetti strap dress that laced up in the back. But no necklace, this wasn’t good.  “You came, what do you think of the outfit?” She asked spinning in a circle, her black high heels clicking on the floor.  “You look nice,” Bracken told her, which wasn’t a lie but that didn’t change the situation.  “Thank you, you look handsome as always,” She said, sitting down at a small round table in the center of the room, “Come sit, do you want anything?” “No, thanks,” Bracken said, sitting down across from her. “Why did you request to see me? I thought I was worse than Ronodin,” “I wanted to talk to you,” “No, I don’t think so. I think you miss your girlfriend, don’t you?” “Of course I do,” Bracken said ignoring the part about Kendra being his girlfrien...

-Endings- “Stop!” Bracken yelled, but he was too late. Kendra pulled the blade from Ronodin’s chest. Kendra’s face showed no remorse as Ronodin’s body hit the ground.  Bracken ran to Ronodin’s side, stopping him from falling down the hill.  “I just did you a huge favor,” Kendra said, wiping off her sword. “You are nothing like the girl I knew. You might be worse than he ever was.” Bracken spat at this person he did not know. “That’s what I was going for, you saw what he did to the world, now you get to see what I’ll do with it. Just to keep you on the edge of your seat, it’s a lot worse.” A big black hole like portal popped up behind Kendra, she took a step back into it and disappeared. Bracken’s attention turned to Ronodin, but he was dead. “I’m sorry,” Warren said, the morning after Ronodin was killed. “It is not your fault, that girl is the one who killed him,” Bracken replied looking out the window. They had buried Ronodin in the backyard, Bracken would have taken h...

Nothing Left to Lose Pt. 16

-A Visit- “Wake up,” Someone said in a sing-song voice. It sounded like Kendra, was he dreaming? Better yet, maybe the past three years had been a dream. He would even settle for the past few days being a dream, for Kendra to still be Kendra and everybody be back at Fablehaven. But he knew better than that. Bracken opened his eyes to find, Kendra laying next to him, with her head on the pillow looking over at him. “Kendra?” Bracken asked, still bleary-eyed.  “Aw, your morning voice is so cute. Miss me?” And that’s when Bracken realized this wasn’t a dream because that voice didn’t belong to the Kendra he knew.  “What are you doing here?” Bracken asked, quickly getting out of bed. “What? Weren’t you looking for me?” She asked, also standing up but on the opposite side of the bed.  “How did you know?” Bracken asked there was a chance Kendra would know they were looking for her but not this soon.   “Oh, honey. I have people who would die for me, you think I ...

Nothing Left to Lose Pt. 15

-Searching- “We have no idea where she is. Nobody had seen her in days.”  Warren said after getting off the phone with a contact. The group had made their way back to the states and were staying at a house owned by the nights of the dawn. Ronodin was still with them but he had gone upstairs hours ago.  “We’ve been at this all day, maybe, we should get some sleep. Start again in the morning.” Vanessa said, taking Warren’s hand when he sat back down at the table. Seth knew she should go back to bed, but maybe if he stayed up a little while longer…. “That means both of you too, get some sleep,” Vanessa said, giving Seth and Bracken the evil eye.  “Guys, Vanessa’s probably right. And if we don’t go to bed she will probably knock us out with her sleeping darts.” Warren said, standing up.  Warren was probably right with the second statement, so Seth decided to go to bed also. Bracken seemed to make the same conclusion.  “Goodnight, guys,” Seth said as they part...

Nothing Left to Lose Pt. 14

-Negotiations-    Bracken didn’t like this one bit. Working with Ronodin was a terrible idea. But they would never get any answers from him if he was a prisoner, and Bracken would do anything to get the real Kendra back, bad idea or not. “I can feel the desperation wafting off of you, Bracky. I mean, just the fact that you’re coming to me for help speaks volumes. You remember I killed you right?” Ronodin said, sitting at a cafe table across from Bracken and Seth.  “And the fact that you’re still here speaks volumes.” Bracken fired back at him, “Something tells me that you know that since Kendra was willing to torture and kill you after everything you did to her, this new Kendra would kill you without flinching. And she’s found you before. Though, she might not kill us. So we’re probably going to be your best protection against her if you help us.” “Wow, you really have me all figured out, don’t you? Why don’t we go to couples therapy next? Sort out all of our probl...

Nothing Left to Lose Pt. 13

-Turning- Seth watched in amazement as his sister healed Bracken, he had never seen magic like this before. But something seemed to go wrong with the spell because a pulse of energy sent Kendra flying back. “Kendra!” Bracken and Seth yelled at the same time. Now completely healed, Bracken stood up and ran to Kendra with Seth right behind him. But for some reason, there seemed to be an invisible wall in between them and Kendra. Then she shot up wide awake, looking confused as she stood up, then recognition seemed to dawn on her when she looked at Seth and Bracken. “Oh, it seems little Kendra messed with too much dark magic,” Kendra said, her voice with a sharper edge to it that Seth wasn’t used to. “Kendra? What happened?” Bracken asked, looking just as confused as Seth was.  “Oh, loverboy, I’m not Kendra. Your girlfriend is on a vacation. But I would be more than glad to fill in if you wanted. Though, I suppose I don’t have a name of my own, so Kendra should do.” “Who are yo...

Nothing Left to Lose Pt. 12

-Darkness- Kendra dragged Ronodin’s body through the door of the room. A simple cloaking spell had helped her get him through the city to where she had set up this room, it had a special enchantment. Once in the room, Kendra propped Ronodin’s body up on a chair. Not bothering to tie him up, there was no way he was getting out of here. A few minutes later Ronodin woke up, a confused expression on his face, “Kendra?” then, realizing it was her, his expression turned to fear. “Kendra, what am I doing here? What is this place?” Ronodin asked, frantically looking around the room. “This is a room full of magic, dark magic that makes you see your worst fears. Can you hear them? The enchantment should be doing its job by now.” “Why aren’t you affected?” He asked, looking more and more distressed by the second. “I figured you would ask that. But it’s pretty easy to figure out.” Kendra said, walking around behind the chair, “Because of you, my worst fears have already come true.” She bent ...

Nothing Left to Lose Pt. 11

-Searching-   Bracken, Seth, and Warren landed in Italy to find Tanu and Vanessa waiting for them.  “Vanessa? What are you doing here?” Warren exclaimed as he ran to her, picking her up and spinning her around, only putting her down to kiss her. “I’m here too,” Tanu said lightheartedly.  “Well, I’m not engaged to you,” Warren said, still holding Vanessa.  ‘We figured that we’ve all been searching for Kendra for so long, being this close called for the whole team.” Vanessa said, walking over to hug Seth. She skipped a hug with Bracken, not that he minded. He and Vanessa had been on okay terms for a few years but hugging was not in those terms. “So what’s the game plan?” Tanu asked, leading the way to the car. “Head to where Ronodin is supposed to be and wait for him or Kendra,” Seth said. Bracken just hoped that they would only find Kendra and not Ronodin. The group got in the car and headed to their destination.  On the car ride, Bracken tuned out the con...

Nothing Left to Lose Pt. 10

-What If?- Kendra threw her phone onto the seat behind her. Could Bracken really be alive? That had definitely sounded like him, and if Bracken was alive, does that mean Seth…? No. There’s no way. And even if they were alive, how would she look into their eyes after everything she’s done. For years Kendra has gone all around the world and killed so many terrible people, but in the process, she has become a terrible person herself. Yes, she had probably saved some people from becoming victims of her own victims but, she had hurt or even killed everybody who had gotten her way. How could Kendra go home to her family let alone Seth or Bracken? Kendra tried to push that question out of her mind. She didn’t have to worry about that because Seth and Bracken were gone, dead. Kendra’s thoughts were consumed by what if’s for the rest of the car ride. When Kendra woke she was in a hotel room, she must have been really distracted because she didn’t even remember getting on a plane, let alon...

Nothing Left to Lose Pt. 9

-Leaving- Warren’s POV “Kendra, wait! I’m not lying to you!” Then Warren heard the door slam shut. “Dammit,” Warren said under his breath, still trying to steady himself after that blast Kendra hit him with. Somehow it seemed different than the forcefield she made last time he saw her, almost less bright. Warren couldn’t explain it. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the stone Bracken gave him. “Hey, found her,” Warren said in his mind as he sat down on the ground. “Really? She was still at the apartment?” Bracken responded, “Oh yeah, she hit me with some magic that seemed like her fairy kind magic, but also different.” Warren said, “She hit you?” Seth’s voice cut in, apparently, Bracken had connected the rocks into a telepathy group chat. “She said sorry before she did,” Warren replied. “At least she’s still herself, kinda,” Seth said, “I’m going to check out her apartment and then come pick you two up,” “Sounds good, see you then,” Bracken said, then Warren felt the conn...

Nothing Left to Lose Pt. 8

-Leaving- The night after the bar incident, Kendra was in the bathroom of her apartment. She was going through a mental list of everything she needed to do before she left. She had a new passport with a new name. She got her plane tickets to Italy, the place where Ronodin was seen. Her bags were packed, and everything in the apartment that could have said she lived there was gone. And then, reaching for her neck to fiddle with her necklace, Kendra noticed that her unicorn necklace was missing. She supposed it wasn’t that big of a deal, it did have some magic that could save her life in a pinch but she could go without it. That seemed like everything until she realized, The knight of the dawn that had seen her, would have a clear description of her. Kendra would need to change something about her appearance. Kendra opened one of the bathroom cabinets and took out the scissors. A few minutes later, her hair was in a very short bob. It honestly didn’t look half bad. A beep came from...

Nothing Left to Lose Pt. 7

-Investigation- “There,” Bracken said as he pointed out a parking spot to Warren. He pulled in and put the car in park. “So, you’re telling me, a knight of the dawn saw Kendra in a bar for magical creatures, confronted her, and now he’s in the hospital?” Seth asked as they all got out of the car. “Yes, well, he was in the hospital, they let him go, he’s going to meet us at the bar he saw Kendra in,” Warren said, coming around the front of the car and onto the sidewalk. “Okay, but she was in a bar? She’s only eighteen,” Seth asked.  “I know it seems a little far off, but this guy seems pretty sure it was her,”  “Okay, well, let’s go find this guy,” Seth said. After a few minutes of walking, they made it to an alleyway, where a tall man in a suit was waiting for them, Bracken noticed the man had quite a few bandages on his face, and his arm was in a sling, “Hey, are you, Adam?” Warren asked as they drew near, “Yeah, that’s me. Are you here about the girl?” Adam said, turn...

Nothing Left to Lose Pr. 6

-Favors- Seth rowed his boat to the island in the middle of the lake. He was on his way to see the singing sisters...again. On his way to make, yet, another deal. Seth Sorenson, at 16 years old, was drowning in owed favors, but this one would be worth it. Because it would help him find his sister, who thinks he’s dead, and Seth would pay any price if it meant he could get his sister back. Warren, Vanessa, and Bracken were more than wary about him going to the sisters for help, but they all obviously wanted to find Kendra too. Calvin had needed to leave the search a year ago to help his people, Seth missed him but understood why he left. Still everybody missed Kendra and they would all do anything to get her back. And for Seth that meant yet, another deal, so they had let him go, not even knowing what it was Seth was going to ask for.  Seth was knocked from his thought by his boat hitting land. Seth got out of the boat and tied it up so that it would still be there when he go...

Nothing Left to Lose Pt. 5

-Unexpected turns- Three years later... Kendra walked down the colorful streets of New Orleans. She had been working on her plan to fix the world for three years now and it was going well, nobody had found her, andnobody will, until this is over. Kendra had been able to get most of the five monarchs crowns, and had them in a safe spot until they were needed. But tonight her hair styled fancier than usual, her black high heels clicking as she walked. Tonight Kendra had decided to dress up a bit, she had to for the place she was going. Kendra was wearing a long red coat, black silk cocktail dress, and high heels. Her lips were painted red and her hair fell in loose curls bouncing as she walked. Kendra turned down a dark alleyway and found a secret door. Inside, a goblin guard took her coat for her and pulled back a velvet curtain leading to the main area of the secret bar/night club. This was a different kind of bar, and anyone could see it just by looking around. It was full of ma...
