Nothing Left to Lose Pt. 5

 -Unexpected turns-

Three years later...

Kendra walked down the colorful streets of New Orleans. She had been working on her plan to fix the world for three years now and it was going well, nobody had found her, andnobody will, until this is over. Kendra had been able to get most of the five monarchs crowns, and had them in a safe spot until they were needed. But tonight her hair styled fancier than usual, her black high heels clicking as she walked. Tonight Kendra had decided to dress up a bit, she had to for the place she was going. Kendra was wearing a long red coat, black silk cocktail dress, and high heels. Her lips were painted red and her hair fell in loose curls bouncing as she walked. Kendra turned down a dark alleyway and found a secret door. Inside, a goblin guard took her coat for her and pulled back a velvet curtain leading to the main area of the secret bar/night club. This was a different kind of bar, and anyone could see it just by looking around. It was full of magical creatures who looked as though they were richer than any human on earth. You could call it a high-class establishment. But  Kendra wasn’t there for the drinks. She spotted her contact in a corner seat and made her way over to them. “Lena! It’s good to see ya! How’s my favorite client doing?” Gal said when they spotted her walking over. They were an incredibly useful satyr Kendra had been working with for a while now. But not long enough for them to know her real name, Gal knew Kendra as Lena, one of the names she used the most. Not many people knew her real name anymore. “Oh please, Gal, we both know you work for me,” Kendra said as she sat down at the table. “Whatever you say! Hey, you want a drink? It’s happy hour.” They asked. “No thanks, I don’t feel like drinking tonight.” The truth was Kendra was three years too young to drink or even be in this bar, but nobody else knew that. “What information do you have for me?” Kendra asked, “Straight to business huh? Okay, I’m cool with that. Rumor has it-”
“Rumors?” Kendra asked, cutting Gal off. “Reliable ones, okay? I wouldn’t call you here if I thought it was fake. Anyway, rumor has it that dark unicorn you wanted me to poke around about to uncover any secrets he left when he died.”
“Ronodin?”
“Yeah, is there another one?”
“No, just checking.” True be told, Kendra never heard much about any unicorns. Most of them were in the new Fairy Realm, and the one she knew personally was dead, and he had been for three years now.
“Turns out, he might not be dead! Some goblin saw him around his old stomping grounds lurking in the shadow.”
“What? Are you sure? That’s impossible.” Kendra asked, shocked. Ronodin should be dead.
“Are you sure? Because this guy has never been wrong before.” Gal asked
“I killed him myself,” Kendra replied
“Did you burn the body?”
“I thought I had,”
“Ya might want to check that when you get a chance,” Gal said, seeming to not notice how shocked Kendra was by this news. If Ronodin was alive, could that mean…? No, all this news means is that Kendra had to find him. And do a better job at killing him this time.
“Did you find anything else?” Kendra asked Gal trying to center her thoughts.
“No, just thought you’d want to know,” Gal said, sipping on their drink.
Kendra nodded and tried to focus. Her emotions were all over the place, she decided to focus on one, anger. She didn’t need all the sadness that came with knowing the killer of her brother and Bracken still walked the world of the living.

“Say, do I get anything for telling you this?” Gal asked.
“How about your life?” Kendra asked.
“Not in a good mood anymore. I’ll send you a list of where people have seen the unicorn when I get home, sounds good?”
“Yeah, thanks. I have to go talk to you later.” Kendra said, starting to stand up.
“Hey, Lena, before you go, that fancy dude in the suit over there has been staring at you,” Gal said grabbing Kendra’s arm.
Kendra scoffed, “Which fancy guy?”
“The human one looks like he could be a secret agent or something,”
Kendra looked over at the man, and he looked away from her. She didn’t recognize him, so she decided it probably won’t be a problem.
“Want me to walk you home or something?” Gal asked.
“No, I can handle myself, thanks though,” Kendra said, walking away.
Kendra walked towards the door, and she thought she was going to make it until the man in the suit grabbed her by the arm. “Excuse me, miss. But what’s your name?” He asked, not letting go of her arm.
“Sorry, not interested,” Kendra said and tried to walk away, but the man wouldn’t let her go.
“I think I might know your grandparents. They’ve been looking for you.” He said.
Oh no, Kendra thought this was the first time in three years that she’s been recognized. This man was probably a Night of the Dawn.
“Let go of me!” Kendra yelled trying to make a scene so he would leave her alone.
“Kendra please your family misses you.”
“I don’t have any family,” Kendra said harshly.
She tried to get her arm loose from his grasp one more time. When the man still wouldn’t let go of her, she stopped pulling and acted like she was going to listen to him. When his grip slackened, Kendra grabbed him by his arm with both of her hands and swung him around a few times to gain momentum. Then she threw him into a table, all the glasses on the table shattering. A few pieces of glass stuck out from his face and arms. The bar fell silent as Kendra walked over to the man, pulling her knife from where it was hidden under her dress. Kendra pulled the man up by the collar of his shirt and held her knife to his throat.
“I told you, I don’t have any family anymore. Tell the people who sent you, I don’t want to be found, and they should give up. And a little note for you in the future don’t grab women.” Kendra said, then she threw him back down on the table, knocking him out is the process and breaking more glass.

“Wow, I guess you really can handle yourself,” Gal said, coming over as everybody started their conversations again, “Why’d he call you Kendra?”
“I think he was drunk, must’ve thought I was someone else, see you later,” Kendra said as she straightened her dress. “Hey, bartender. I’ll pay for this man’s drink, and all the glasses I broke,”  Kendra put a hundred dollar bill on the counter, and with that, she walked towards the door. Kendra grabbed her coat on the way out. And headed back to her hotel, already making plans to get out of the country. She would be gone by the time any more knights got in town looking for her. The family Kendra had left just didn’t seem to understand she didn’t want to be found. And now that they had gotten so close, she would have to be extra careful, probably change her name again. But right now Kendra had a unicorn to kill.

A/N I want to apologize if I ever mess up Gals pronouns, my laptop would keep changing “them” to “Him” and I think I caught them all but idk. Just point it out and I can fix it :)

Brandon Mull's Interview with Shadow Mountain

Today Bradon Mull was interviewed by Callie Hansen on the Shadow Moutain YouTube channel. I was able to take the time to watch it live and thought I would share some of the questions and answers with everyone. I will not go over everything said, just mostly just the things that affect Fablehaven and DragonWatch. If you want to watch the full interview, you can find it on YouTube! The first question I want to go over is: How do you come up with so many names for people, creatures, and magical items?  Brandon’s answer, “I do put thought into names because, to me, the perfect fantasy name is something king of new, and different, but also reasonably easy to pronounce.  And so finding those kinds of names, at least for me, takes time, takes some thought, sometimes I make up the names.  For example, the perfect fantasy name to me is Gandal, right? Easy to say, easy to spell and you don’t have a friend at school named Gandalf usually.  And so that’s the kind of name I...

Nothing Left to Lose Pt. 17

-Endings- “Stop!” Bracken yelled, but he was too late. Kendra pulled the blade from Ronodin’s chest. Kendra’s face showed no remorse as Ronodin’s body hit the ground.  Bracken ran to Ronodin’s side, stopping him from falling down the hill.  “I just did you a huge favor,” Kendra said, wiping off her sword. “You are nothing like the girl I knew. You might be worse than he ever was.” Bracken spat at this person he did not know. “That’s what I was going for, you saw what he did to the world, now you get to see what I’ll do with it. Just to keep you on the edge of your seat, it’s a lot worse.” A big black hole like portal popped up behind Kendra, she took a step back into it and disappeared. Bracken’s attention turned to Ronodin, but he was dead. “I’m sorry,” Warren said, the morning after Ronodin was killed. “It is not your fault, that girl is the one who killed him,” Bracken replied looking out the window. They had buried Ronodin in the backyard, Bracken would have taken h...

Nothing Left to Lose Pt. 20

-Funeral- Bracken, Seth, and Warren walked into the church at twelve o’clock the next day. If this all went well, they would have Kendra back by the end of the day.  “Hello handsome, and the other two, but damn Bracken, you do look good in a suit.” She said, looking him up and down. They had all decided to go with formal wear and apparently so had she. She was wearing a long black dress that barely had a back, and her lips were the color of blood. Behind her was a picture of Kendra that was covered in black see through fabric. “Shouldn’t this be a funeral for the newest person you killed?” Bracken asked. “Really?” Kendra said with a sigh, then she snapped her fingers and a picture of Ronodin popped up, “Better?”  Bracken didn’t respond.  “Why do you even care that I killed him? Don’t you remember what he did to you? Oh, did you two make up? Have a family dinner heart to heart?” “Just because we had our differences doesn’t mean I wanted him dead, things have changed...
