Nothing Left to Lose Pt. 18

 -Cafe date-

Bracken walked up to the cafe, it wasn’t that far from the house, so he had decided to walk. He opened the door and walked in, there was nobody inside, well, nobody besides her. She was dressed in a short red silk spaghetti strap dress that laced up in the back. But no necklace, this wasn’t good.
“You came, what do you think of the outfit?” She asked spinning in a circle, her black high heels clicking on the floor.
“You look nice,” Bracken told her, which wasn’t a lie but that didn’t change the situation.
“Thank you, you look handsome as always,” She said, sitting down at a small round table in the center of the room, “Come sit, do you want anything?”
“No, thanks,” Bracken said, sitting down across from her.
“Why did you request to see me? I thought I was worse than Ronodin,”
“I wanted to talk to you,”
“No, I don’t think so. I think you miss your girlfriend, don’t you?”
“Of course I do,” Bracken said ignoring the part about Kendra being his girlfriend, “But you won’t let that happen,”
“Are you sure about that?”
“I’m pretty sure you want to keep control over Kendra’s body, so, yeah, I’m sure,”
“You came here because you miss Kendra, to you I’m just a knock off version, a better, more fashionable one, but that’s beside the point. I can let her come out, only for a few minutes but that’s better than nothing. I can’t have her ruining anything,”
“What’s the catch?”
“No catch, I just want you to see how badly you messed up. I’m just going to say your answer is yes, so let’s get on with this, I have things to do. Oh, and Bracken, don’t try anything, I don’t have the necklace on me.” Then she said some weird incantation, closed her eyes and fell to the ground, Bracken rushed to catch her before she would hit the ground. He was holding her in his arms when her eyes flew open and she shot up trying to get free of his grasp. And in doing so, she punched Bracken in the face, which hurt, a lot. She looked like she might punch him again so he grabbed her hands so that she wouldn’t be able to hit him again.
“Hey, look at me, it’s Bracken, you’re okay,” He said, getting her to look at him.
“Bracken?” She asked,
“Hey, it’s okay, it’s me, I’m here,” Bracken whispered softly, moving a strand of hair from her face. “Are you?”
“It’s me,” Kendra said.
There was a moment of stillness between them before they collided with each other. Kendra hugged Bracken so tight he could barely breathe, but he didn’t mind.
When they finally parted, Kendra reached up and touched Bracken’s face looking up at him in amazement. Which was understandable considering that the last time she saw him, he was dying. Kendra moved closer to him, he was still holding her around the waist holding her from being completely on the floor. Both of her hands were holding Bracken’s face, he stayed completely still, waiting to see what she would do. Kendra moved closer to Bracken until finally, their lips met in a kiss. He kissed her back without a second thought. Kendra had her arms wrapped around his neck, she was holding him so close he wasn’t sure that she would ever let go, which was fine with him. Kendra pushed him down so that she was on top of him. Bracken honestly didn’t know how long the kiss lasted, but when Kendra pulled away they were both out of breath. “Sorry, I just needed to do that,”
“It’s okay, I get it,” Bracken said as Kendra helped him up.
“What am I wearing? I mean, it’s cute, but still.”
“Yeah, well, your darker roommate has a slightly different taste than you.”
“You could say that. Now, why am I here?” Kendra asked, sitting down at the table, holding Bracken’s hand across the table as he sat down,  “I’m guessing it’s not for very long, from what I heard at least.”
“No, I don’t know why she let you out, but I doubt she’s being nice,”
“When she has control, it’s like watching through shattered glass. So I know it’s the necklace that can bring me back right?”
“Yeah, but she must have known the only reason I asked her here was that I was hoping she would be wearing the necklace.”
“Wait, did I kill Ronodin last night?”
“You didn’t. This twisted version of you did.” Bracken said, though he wasn’t sure if it mattered which version of her was in control, she might have killed Ronodin either way if she still thought he and Seth were dead.
“How are you alive?”
“That I will tell you when you have full control over yourself again. Right now, we need to focus on getting you back.”
“Bracken, I don’t think that’s going to happen.”
“Of course it will. Everybody is back at the house right now working on a plan.”
“No, Bracken. You need to promise me when it becomes clear to you that you won’t be able to get me back, you will kill me.”
“What? Kendra-”
“Bracken, you have to kill me.”
“No, I’m not going to kill you,”
“Please, don’t sacrifice the world because you love me. I don’t know her whole plan, but it’s not good, you have to take me out.”
“No,” Bracken said, taking both of Kendra’s hands and looking her in the eyes, “Kendra, I know feel must feel guilty about the past three years, but you can come back from this you’ve barely even lived your life, sacrificing yourself isn’t noble or heroic, it’s tragic.”
“Bracken, listen to me-ouch,” Kendra said, clutching her head. Bracken immediately stood up and crouched down by her side.
“What’s wrong?”
“I think she’s taking back over,”
“No, we’re not done with this conversation,”
“It looks like we are,” Kendra said, turning so that she could put her hands on Bracken’s shoulders, “Bracken, please promise me that you will do what’s right.”
“I promise you it won’t come to that,” Bracken reached up and touch her face, “It won’t come to that, I will see you again, you will see Seth again,”
“I hope so,” Kendra kissed Bracken’s forehead right before she fell limp off the chair and into his arms.
“No, come back,” He whispered but it was too late, when she opened her eyes again, the girl he loved was gone.
“Aw, you caught me, how romantic. But you messed up my hair,” She said, standing up, “Oh, you really messed up my hair, what did you-?”
“We’re done here,” Bracken said, cutting her off, heading for the door. It slammed behind him but he didn’t pay any attention to it, he just kept walking until he was back at the house.

Brandon Mull's Interview with Shadow Mountain

Today Bradon Mull was interviewed by Callie Hansen on the Shadow Moutain YouTube channel. I was able to take the time to watch it live and thought I would share some of the questions and answers with everyone. I will not go over everything said, just mostly just the things that affect Fablehaven and DragonWatch. If you want to watch the full interview, you can find it on YouTube! The first question I want to go over is: How do you come up with so many names for people, creatures, and magical items?  Brandon’s answer, “I do put thought into names because, to me, the perfect fantasy name is something king of new, and different, but also reasonably easy to pronounce.  And so finding those kinds of names, at least for me, takes time, takes some thought, sometimes I make up the names.  For example, the perfect fantasy name to me is Gandal, right? Easy to say, easy to spell and you don’t have a friend at school named Gandalf usually.  And so that’s the kind of name I...

Nothing Left to Lose Pt. 17

-Endings- “Stop!” Bracken yelled, but he was too late. Kendra pulled the blade from Ronodin’s chest. Kendra’s face showed no remorse as Ronodin’s body hit the ground.  Bracken ran to Ronodin’s side, stopping him from falling down the hill.  “I just did you a huge favor,” Kendra said, wiping off her sword. “You are nothing like the girl I knew. You might be worse than he ever was.” Bracken spat at this person he did not know. “That’s what I was going for, you saw what he did to the world, now you get to see what I’ll do with it. Just to keep you on the edge of your seat, it’s a lot worse.” A big black hole like portal popped up behind Kendra, she took a step back into it and disappeared. Bracken’s attention turned to Ronodin, but he was dead. “I’m sorry,” Warren said, the morning after Ronodin was killed. “It is not your fault, that girl is the one who killed him,” Bracken replied looking out the window. They had buried Ronodin in the backyard, Bracken would have taken h...

Nothing Left to Lose Pt. 20

-Funeral- Bracken, Seth, and Warren walked into the church at twelve o’clock the next day. If this all went well, they would have Kendra back by the end of the day.  “Hello handsome, and the other two, but damn Bracken, you do look good in a suit.” She said, looking him up and down. They had all decided to go with formal wear and apparently so had she. She was wearing a long black dress that barely had a back, and her lips were the color of blood. Behind her was a picture of Kendra that was covered in black see through fabric. “Shouldn’t this be a funeral for the newest person you killed?” Bracken asked. “Really?” Kendra said with a sigh, then she snapped her fingers and a picture of Ronodin popped up, “Better?”  Bracken didn’t respond.  “Why do you even care that I killed him? Don’t you remember what he did to you? Oh, did you two make up? Have a family dinner heart to heart?” “Just because we had our differences doesn’t mean I wanted him dead, things have changed...
