Nothing Left to Lose Pt. 12

 -Darkness-

Kendra dragged Ronodin’s body through the door of the room. A simple cloaking spell had helped her get him through the city to where she had set up this room, it had a special enchantment. Once in the room, Kendra propped Ronodin’s body up on a chair. Not bothering to tie him up, there was no way he was getting out of here. A few minutes later Ronodin woke up, a confused expression on his face, “Kendra?” then, realizing it was her, his expression turned to fear. “Kendra, what am I doing here? What is this place?” Ronodin asked, frantically looking around the room. “This is a room full of magic, dark magic that makes you see your worst fears. Can you hear them? The enchantment should be doing its job by now.”
“Why aren’t you affected?” He asked, looking more and more distressed by the second.
“I figured you would ask that. But it’s pretty easy to figure out.” Kendra said, walking around behind the chair, “Because of you, my worst fears have already come true.” She bent down to whisper into his ear, “I fear nothing.”

It wasn’t long before Ronodin was screaming in fear. Pleading to things that weren’t there. Kendra could feel whispers trying to get her to let them materialize into illusions to fool her, but they weren’t strong enough fears. Out of nowhere, the doors to the room came flying open. And Warren walked in, “I found her!” He yelled to whoever he was with.
“Warre? What are you doing here? Leave now it isn’t safe for you here!” Kendra yelled at him.
“If it’s not safe for me it’s not safe for you. Just wait one second please, listen.” And then, Bracken came up from behind Warren. Maybe the magic in the room was getting to her. “Bracken?” Kendra whispered as he entered the room and started to come near.
“Kendra, it’s me. You’re okay, I’m alive.” Kendra wanted to believe him, but she was in a room that shows you your worst fears, this must be one of her newest ones. “No, you can’t be, I watched you die. This has to be an illusion.” Kendra said, pulling out a dagger from under her shirt. Bracken took a step closer to her and she plunged the dagger into his side, but he didn’t disappear. What? No, he should have disappeared. At that moment Seth ran through the door and that’s when Kendra realized what she had done. “No, Bracken?” she whispered in disbelief.
“Kendra, it's really me,” Bracken said, holding his side, the dagger still in it.
“No, no, no,” Kendra said, helping Bracken to the floor, holding him tight in her arms. “I’m so sorry,” She was trying to hold back tears but it wasn’t working.
“Get Tanu in here quick!” Seth yelled but Kendra barely noticed, all she could see was the silver blood all over her hands. Tanu came into the room soon after Seeth called for him, and he gently took Bracken from Kendra’s so that he would see that wound. “Tanu?” Kendra asked, it had been so long since she had seen him it almost didn’t feel real.
“Hey Kendra, long time so see,” Tanu said with a soft smile.
“Can you help him?” Kendra asked hoping she would get a good answer.
“I think so’ Tanu replied, but he didn’t seem too sure of his words.
“Kendra?” Someone said, putting their hand on her shoulder, it was Seth.
“Seth?” Kendra said as she tackled her brother with a hug.
“Hey, Kendra, I missed you,” Seth said hugging her back.
“I missed you too,”
“What are those weird whispers?” Seth asked, pulling away from her.
“Oh, the spell on this room. Let me take it down.” Kendra did a quick disenchantment, and the room became a little bit brighter.
“That’s better,” Warren said, walking up to the group with Vanessa.
Kendra was about to get up to see her, but she noticed a small shiny thing poking out from Bracken’s pocket. Taking it out, Kendra realized it was her missing necklace. “Bracken, where did you get this?” Kendra asked, taking his hand.
“Outside the bar, you took that knight down in. It’s yours, isn’t it?” He said, looking too pale for Kendra’s liking.
“Yeah, it is. I was wondering where it went.”
“Kendra? Did you by any chance poison that dagger?” Tanu asked, looking up from the wound. Kendra cursed under her breath as realization dawned on her, “Yes, I did. Most of my weapons are poisoned.”
“A poison that works on unicorns? Do you have an antidote?”
“No, there is no antidote. I was planning on using it on him” Kendra said, jerking her head over to Ronodin, who was still knocked out. But an idea came to Kendra right when she was about to lose it, the necklace. “Wait, this necklace, it has magic that might save him.”
“Might?” Tanu asked.
“It’s experimental. I have no idea what will happen, but it should heal anything. I have to try it.”
Kendra said, taking the necklace and holding it to Bracken’s chest, and started the spell. After reciting the words, the necklace started to glow, and it started to heal Bracken. When he was completely healed Kendra was about to stop the spell, but the necklace started to grow hotter, and the glow started the have black swirls coming out of it and they attacked Kendra. Then, a strong pulse of energy sent her flying back. And then Kendra’s memory cut off, and she fell into darkness.

Brandon Mull's Interview with Shadow Mountain

Today Bradon Mull was interviewed by Callie Hansen on the Shadow Moutain YouTube channel. I was able to take the time to watch it live and thought I would share some of the questions and answers with everyone. I will not go over everything said, just mostly just the things that affect Fablehaven and DragonWatch. If you want to watch the full interview, you can find it on YouTube! The first question I want to go over is: How do you come up with so many names for people, creatures, and magical items?  Brandon’s answer, “I do put thought into names because, to me, the perfect fantasy name is something king of new, and different, but also reasonably easy to pronounce.  And so finding those kinds of names, at least for me, takes time, takes some thought, sometimes I make up the names.  For example, the perfect fantasy name to me is Gandal, right? Easy to say, easy to spell and you don’t have a friend at school named Gandalf usually.  And so that’s the kind of name I...

Nothing Left to Lose Pt. 17

-Endings- “Stop!” Bracken yelled, but he was too late. Kendra pulled the blade from Ronodin’s chest. Kendra’s face showed no remorse as Ronodin’s body hit the ground.  Bracken ran to Ronodin’s side, stopping him from falling down the hill.  “I just did you a huge favor,” Kendra said, wiping off her sword. “You are nothing like the girl I knew. You might be worse than he ever was.” Bracken spat at this person he did not know. “That’s what I was going for, you saw what he did to the world, now you get to see what I’ll do with it. Just to keep you on the edge of your seat, it’s a lot worse.” A big black hole like portal popped up behind Kendra, she took a step back into it and disappeared. Bracken’s attention turned to Ronodin, but he was dead. “I’m sorry,” Warren said, the morning after Ronodin was killed. “It is not your fault, that girl is the one who killed him,” Bracken replied looking out the window. They had buried Ronodin in the backyard, Bracken would have taken h...

Nothing Left to Lose Pt. 20

-Funeral- Bracken, Seth, and Warren walked into the church at twelve o’clock the next day. If this all went well, they would have Kendra back by the end of the day.  “Hello handsome, and the other two, but damn Bracken, you do look good in a suit.” She said, looking him up and down. They had all decided to go with formal wear and apparently so had she. She was wearing a long black dress that barely had a back, and her lips were the color of blood. Behind her was a picture of Kendra that was covered in black see through fabric. “Shouldn’t this be a funeral for the newest person you killed?” Bracken asked. “Really?” Kendra said with a sigh, then she snapped her fingers and a picture of Ronodin popped up, “Better?”  Bracken didn’t respond.  “Why do you even care that I killed him? Don’t you remember what he did to you? Oh, did you two make up? Have a family dinner heart to heart?” “Just because we had our differences doesn’t mean I wanted him dead, things have changed...
